Advances in cancer treatment continue at an exciting pace and Baptist Hospital remains committed to leading the way. In a few years, a comprehensive cancer center will open on the Baptist Hospital campus, where Baptist Health’s cancer care and services will be enhanced even further. Currently, Baptist is one of the very few facilities in South Florida to have groundbreaking radiotherapy technology called TrueBeam STx. This technology allows our radiation oncologist to treat cancers that were previously difficult to treat.

TrueBeam incorporates rapid arc technology, which rotates this device around the patient to quickly deliver radiation from nearly any angle.

By using this new therapy, Baptist Hospital’s radiation oncologists can shorten their patient’s treatment time from hours to minutes.

[Alan Lewin, M.D.]
TrueBeam is a significant breakthrough in radiation therapy technology. It offers treatment possibilities for cancer patients with tumors previously difficult to treat because of their location to your vital organs or because of the tumors natural tendency to move within the body.

This machine helps doctors target some of the more complex cancers in areas such as the lungs, abdomen, and liver. Areas where tumors can move with each breath. This new technology synchronizes the accurate targeting of tumor killing radiation with the patient’s position and any motion of the tumor. It maximizes radiation to the tumor and minimizes exposure to healthy tissue by precisely sculpting the radiation dose to the tumor. Avoiding radiation to healthy surrounding tissue means a higher dose of radiation can be used. The higher dose, speed, and precision give patients an increased chance for cure, while minimizing side effects.

It has the ability to essentially target or lock onto the tumor by checking thousands of location points every 10 milliseconds and selectively delivers radiation only when the tumor comes into range. This ability allows us to safely and effectively treat a greater number of complex cancers.

[Ally Garcia-Serra, M.D.]
TrueBeam has the ability to perform a full range of radiation therapy techniques. This means we can choose the best form of treatment for each patient and deliver these treatments quickly within a few minutes per day, and more comfortably.
