Monero is a cryptocurrency that began in 2014, as an implementation of the CryptoNote protocol.
The CryptoNote white paper was released anonymously under the name Nicolas van Saberhagen in December 2012, outlining a series of potential improvements to the Bitcoin protocol to better protect anonymity on the network. The white paper would lead to multiple actual implementations, but by far the most popular implementation is Monero.
At the moment, Monero is the 8th largest cryptocurrency by market cap, and in my opinion any serious crypto enthusiast should be up to speed on the ideas behind it and how to use it.
