Revisit: What Manufacturers Think of Mining (6 Months Later)

We revisit a topic from July of 2017: What do board partners and PSU manufacturers think of cryptomining? What is affecting GPU price?

This video visits the topic of GPU prices and video card supply, primarily asking manufacturers and board partners to anonymously share thoughts on the industry. During this discussion, we talk about rising memory prices — as with RAM — and tightening memory supply. We also talk cryptomining demand and its impact, GPU mining, and power supply maker thoughts on the same issues.

This is a time where high RAM prices and high GPU prices have made it nearly impossible to build a new gaming PC — at least, not without spending a fortune. Mining is partly to blame, but supply is also to blame. Vendors are concerned about over-investing in additional graphics cards when a cryptomining crash could mean being left “holding the bag,” as it were. This goes further with new architectures undoubtedly looming — no Turing test needed to figure that out — as it becomes harder to sell overstock of old architectures at that time.
