BIG blow for Mnangagwa as EU slams ZEC 2018 elections: The results contained numerous errors and lacked transparency.
THE European Union Election Observer Mission (EU EOM) yesterday said Zimbabwe’s highly contested July 30 presidential election results were not “verifiable” or “traceable”, casting doubt on their reliability and accuracy.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa was declared the winner with a 50,6% vote after a failed Constitutional Court (ConCourt) challenge by his main rival, Nelson Chamisa of the MDC Alliance, who won 44,3%.

The EU said in the executive summary of its report that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) “lacked full independence and appeared to not always act in an impartial manner”.

“The final results, as announced by the Electoral Commission, contained numerous errors and lacked adequate traceability, transparency and verifiability,” it said.
Chamisa has refused to accept the ConCourt ruling and maintains that he won the election and that he has a legitimate claim to lead the southern African country.

With Zimbabwe’s economy suffering chronic shortages of cash as well as high unemployment, the vote was seen as a crucial step toward pulling Zimbabwe out of diplomatic isolation and securing international funding.

Instead, an army crackdown on opposition supporters which left seven people dead on August 1, and the contested nature of the polls, left the country deeply polarised.

Addressing journalists in Harare, deputy chief observer Mark Stevens said after analysing all the processes, the EU came to a conclusion that the polls fell short of international standards.

The EU said four days after the poll, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) provided stakeholders with a free CD-ROM copy of presidential results, in a protected excel format, providing a breakdown per polling station, based on original V11 forms.

“As these results are not in the official V11 form, they do not provide the full traceability which the EU EOM had called for in its preliminary statement,” the EU EOM said.
