The Canon EOS RP isn’t remarkable in any way… except one: the price. $1,300 for a brand-new, full-frame mirrorless camera has never been done before. It’s less expensive than many APS-C and Micro Four-thirds mirrorless cameras, even though the sensor is FAR larger. That bigger sensor means we can expect less than half the total visible noise compared to APS-C cameras (like the Fujifilm X-T30, X-T3, and Sony a6400) and 1/4 the total visible compared to M43 cameras (like the Olympus E-M1X).

But the EOS RP has some serious limitations. Though Canon is advertising 4K video, it’s extremely limited. Canon chose a tiny battery that will definitely frustrate users, especially video shooters. It does have eye AF, but the way it’s implemented makes it impractical (by our standards).

But, at $1,300, Canon has shown there’s no reason for them to make APS-C cameras anymore. While Canon is still building out the complete R system, it already has distinct advantages over Sony, Fuji, and Nikon’s mirrorless systems.
