'BAY OF LIGHT' – A Canon Eos R Short film

Music: YU UTSU – ‘Sun’

Shot on the Canon Eos R (internal 8bit in c-log and standard) with two lenses, the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 and the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary. No ND filters used. Both cropped 4k 30fps and HD 60fps formats were used. I shot mostly on a tripod and used the Rhino Evo slider too. All shots were in autofocus mode where I touched the screen to pull focus. Even at 600mm on the big Sigma the focus was great. More about the camera at bottom of description.

About the video:

Here’s an edit from footage I shot over two days during the first week of January 2019. I was basically testing out the Canon Eos R and planning on doing a camera review so these were my first real ‘video’ shots I took with it with the purposes of using them for the review (which I haven’t got to yet!). I had used the camera for a few weeks prior but only for photography purposes.

The first day I was in Salthill filming, it was grey gloomy conditions which I was expecting as we had that type of weather for weeks by that stage. Very dark, very grey, very gloomy – even for Ireland! The sun literally didn’t come out for a solid month and it was beginning to take it’s toll on me. Then on the second day (4th Jan), ray’s of sunshine began to break through the clouds over the Clare hills. And its looked just amazing as you’ll see in the video. Then the whole sky turned into a lovey amber colour much to the appreciation of the people out walking. A few people gathered to take in the beatufil sunset and some of them were happy to let me get a few shots of them, especially the young lady at the end.

More about the camera.

The Canon Eos R is a decent camera for photography and in my opinion it produces great video images too. I’d recommend it as a dual purpose camera if photography is your main focus and you’re into the Canon thing. As you’re main video camera I’d strongly recommend getting something with a stabilised sensor. But as I said, the image is quite nice. I actually think the Eos R produces a more filmic pleasing image than a GH5.

THE GOOD – Fabulous autofocus, 30 megapixel photography beast, lovely build quality, great EVF, decent battery life, Canon lenses adapt well. Great image!

THE BAD – terrible banding and artefacts (I shot on lower quality mp4, that could be it), poor frame rate choices, no IBIS, expensive.
