Things are moving at pace in the talks now, with gossip about the deal either being dead or on the verge of agreement – and as I speak Jacob Rees-Mogg, the Leader of the House of Commons, has said he cannot confirm whether the Super Saturday meeting planned for this weekend will be held or not.
This ties in with news that the EU will call another emergency EU27 summit to discuss the Brexit deal, if the UK misses tonight’s deadline for the planned summit in the next few days.
But the Guardian is saying that Boris Johnson is on the brink of a Brexit deal after making Irish border concessions.
And it further says that:
“A draft treaty could now be published on Wednesday morning, according to senior British and EU sources.”
This, it is reported, will mean a customs border down the Irish Sea and that will inevitably lead to some hard negotiations having to be done with the DUP, the members of the European Research Group and other so called Spartan Brexiteers in the House of Commons.
But there are also reports of discomfort over the speed at which this is happening on both the EU and UK side of the talks.
Now, from a government point of view, having that Super Saturday meeting of MPs could well be critical. Because without it there can be no vote by MPs to agree the Boris Johnson Brexit deal.
And that of course means that the Benn Surrender Act would automatically come into play, with that Saturday the 19th of October being the deadline to send the letter.
So, if Boris does have a counter card to the Benn Surrender Act, then it will be played on Saturday.
Then there’s also the matter of all that legislation they need to get through to ratify a deal with the EU.
But two ardent Tory Brexiteers, Steve Baker and Jacob Rees-Mogg have said that this new deal is a far cry from the Theresa May deal.
So, that leads me to think that it night be a relatively simple agreement that really could be legislated for in a few days – otherwise Boris will almost certainly need a technical Brexit extension to get that deal done.
So of course, the Remainer MPs and campaigners are out there trying to push for a Brexit extension to hold their second EU referendum.
The Express reports that:
“Rebel Tories who were booted out of the party by Boris Johnson are formulating plans to force a Brexit extension even if a deal passes.”
And 37 Remainer MEPs, which is just about all of them, bar those in The Brexit Party of course, have written a letter to the President of the EU Commission, Donald Tusk, to beg him please to grant the UK an Article 50 extension.
In the letter they talk about the majority of British people now wanting to stay in the EU, as if, and that they are representatives of ‘progressive opposition parties’.
No, they are not ‘progressive’ they are actually reactionary in that they want to keep things exactly as they are.
It’s the Brexiteers that want to progress this country on to true independence, proper democracy and to refind the nation’s soul.
The Remainers end their begging letter with:
“We therefore ask the European Council to extend the Brexit deadline to allow sufficient time for the British democratic process to play out. We are confident that, ultimately, we will be able to move forward together in Europe to rebuild our relationship of trust and cooperation. And at home we can reinforce our democracy and rebuild an economy and society that work in the interests of all our citizens.”
