In a new report, the United Nations has issued another stark warning over the state of the global climate.
“We are on the verge of the abyss,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told a press conference as he unveiled the State of the Global Climate 2023 report by the WMO on Monday.
The report described 2023 as one of the hottest years on record, about 1.2 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial period, with global temperatures moving dangerously close to the 1.5-degree cap set by the Paris agreement.
That is despite the economic slowdown, and lower greenhouse gas emissions, over the last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
