For a particular group of people in the Bitcoin community, Bitcoin’s speed was not going to cut it, and they’d had enough. It was in 2017 that all came to a head. A fork was proposed originally under the name Bitcoin ABC, eventually losing out to a name proposed by ViaBTC mining pool. That name was Bitcoin Cash.
This fork took place on August 1, 2017

Anyone who owned Bitcoin would receive the same amount of Bitcoin Cash. BCH began trading at $240 while Bitcoin was trading at $2700

Coinbase listed Bitcoin Cash on December 19, 2017 and the Coinbase platform experienced price abnormalities that led to an insider trading investigation.
On 20 December 2017 it reached an intraday high of $4,355.62 and then fell 88% to $519.12 on 23 August 2018.

The real question is, should BCH be trying to compete with Bitcoin?
It seems that it would be much more advantageous to stay away from the perception of direct competition with btc.
