RC ADVENTURES – Tips for Travelling with your RC’s

Once again I find myself in Mexico, and we are staying at the Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit. This is my Sons first time travelling to Mexico, and we are in Puerto Vallarta. I have been asked many times over my years on YouTube how I successfully travel with my RC’s & the batteries that I need to carry with me. I hope this video is helpful to all of the RC ADDiCTS out there that want to bring radio control hobby vehicles with them. Fathers, Mothers, Sons and Daughters are now enjoying the hobby, and wanting to transport their RC’s abroad.

There are some good practices that I like to follow, and I have made a list to better help you have a successful, and fun experience.

1) Call ahead to your Airline to find out what type of limitations they have on LiPO batteries. Some may have a MilliAmp limitations. Some airlines require the batteries to be “hard packs”. Even further, some may require that they are under a certain dimension. You may even need a specific carrying case, such as “Tupperware”. I usually keep my lipos with my camera, or stowed away in the bowels of the airplane, after following the rules of the airline.

2) Remember to pack your RC well. It needs to be protected from all the other heavy bags in the airplane under-carriage. The personnel at the airport do not know that you have “important”, and potentially delicate cargo in your bags. I suggest Bubble-wrap, or wrapping your RC’s in some clothing to give it additional protection.

3) If your RC is over-sized, consider giving it it’s own bag. This way you can ensure that your RC is well protected.

4) Consider the size, and style of your RC. Is it appropriate for the area you are travelling to? Nitro is fun, but will (more than likely) be a bother to other visitors – if you are going to a resort. I always bring an electric RC – that way most folks are interested – rather than annoyed.

5) If you are going to an ocean area – or a place of high humidity – consider that there air may be saturated with water, and/or salt. This can cause issues with your electronics if they are not “waterproof”. Even “waterproof” electronics are not completely safe from salty water. Salt is a conductor of electricity, and can cause your RC to short out, if not properly protected. Not ALL RC’s will short out, but it is up to you to take that risk.

6) Be prepared to change your hardware (screws and such) after your trip. After EACH USE, make sure to rinse your RC (AFTER YOU UNPLUG iT from the Battery), to get all the salt off of your vehicle and electronics. Rust, corrosion and other forms of deterioration can occur if you are not careful, and prepared. (Dielectric Grease can help plug open ports of electronics with little to no adverse effects)

7) BRiNG EVERYTHING YOU NEED! Minimal tools, of course. A Cross Wrench, A Set of Hex Bit Drivers (Where I get my HEX BiT DRiVERS: http://amzn.to/2Cgdz7p), Pliers & Krazy Glue, a few extra screws and wheel nuts, and most of all… Don’t forget… BRiNG YOUR BATTERY CHARGER! (You may even want to bring an extra receiver, servo, and esc if you have one.)

8) HAVE FUN!! YOU ARE ON VACATiON!

I hope this video helps all of my fellow RC enthusiasts out there have a happy, successful vacation!

Maurice, Jem and myself, Thank YOU for supporting our RC show, and we hope this video helps you have a fantastic and fun RC ADVENTURE of your own!
