Today we’re taking a look at the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro Lens. We tested it out on the Canon EOS R, but the lens works great on the new EOS RP as well. The 35mm RF Lens is cheaper than the Canon EF 35mm lens, and is in our opinion the best first lens for the Canon EOS R or RP as an entry into the RF mount system.

Recently while traveling to Cozumel, Mexico, I only wanted to have a small camera package, so I just brought my Canon EOS R and the Canon RF 35mm Lens. The compact size of the lens was a huge benefit. I wanted to try and be inconspicuous roaming Mexico without a huge lens or camera bag.

The 35mm RF IS Macro Lens performed well and allowed for some high quality photos. The f/1.8 wasn’t quite as shallow as the f/1.4 EF lens, but for under $500 the 35mm RF lens is a great first lens for the Canon EOS R and EOS RP. One of the other nice features is that this is a Macro lens, and as you can see in the Canon EOS R sample photos in the video, it’s sharp as well. The IS and image stabilization is a huge plus for us too. Having the image stabilized lens, means you can shoot in lower light scenarios, and again, makes this a great walk-around lens when you don’t want to carry a lot of gear.

For this episode we tried to mix it up by filming on the ARRI Alexa Mini and Steadicam Aero 30, rather than our standard static setup. Let us know what you think!
