We test the Canon EOS R (http://sdp.io/r) full-frame mirrorless camera image quality vs its biggest competitors: the Canon 5D Mk IV (http://sdp.io/5d4), Canon 6D Mk II (http://sdp.io/6d2), Sony a7 Mk III (http://sdp.io/a73), and Sony a7R III (http://sdp.io/a7r3). I was really shocked by the results of this comparison review – the Canon EOS R solidly beats the a7 III in most conditions, with noticeably sharper images, even at high ISOs. However, the dynamic range of the EOS R has a real flaw: heavy banding when recovering shadows. We don’t see this flaw in the 5D Mk IV, which supposedly has the same sensor. Nonetheless, dynamic range is better than the Canon 6D mk II.
