In un casale della campagna toscana, in provincia di Siena, vive in armonia un gruppo di donne. Elena, donna energica e razionale, dirige la fattoria, mentre la domestica Fosca, pratica e di buon senso, è il vero nume tutelare della casa, che provvede alle necessità materiali di tutte. Fosca si prende cura di due ragazzine, sua figlia Immacolata e la nipote di Elena, Martina che è figlia di Claudia, famosa attrice residente a Roma, che per egoismo e necessità di lavoro ha abbandonato la ragazzina affidandola alla sorella Elena.
