Charles Whitman, an ex-Marine sharpshooter, wreaked havoc on the University of Texas campus on August 1, 1966. Armed with several rifles & handguns as well as rounds of ammunition, Whitman went to the observation deck at the top of the University’s Main Building tower. A trained sniper, this was the perfect position for him to start picking off his victims. The final death toll of his attack was 15, including an unborn child & people who later died of their inflicted wounds. As police arrived on the scene, officers Houston McCoy & Ramiro Martinez reached the observation deck & fatally shot Whitman, putting an end to his killing spree. What people would later find out is that Whitman’s murderous rampage begun before he’d even reached the university. That same day he murdered his wife & his mother, leaving behind a note claiming that he’d done so to spare them future humiliation. His autopsy revealed that Whitman had a brain tumor. This may have caused his ‘overwhelming violent impulses’ which prior to the attack, he’d sought professional help for. The Dunblane school massacre is the deadliest mass shooting in British history. On March 13, 1996 Thomas Watt Hamilton entered the Dunblane Primary School in Stirlingshire, Scotland. Armed with four legally-owned handguns & over 700 cartridges of ammunition, he fired two shots before making his way to the gymnasium. On April 20, 1999, a mass shooting mass shooting took place at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, that would leave a scar on the community for years after. Dressed in trench coats & armed with handguns, shotguns & homemade explosive devices, high school seniors Eric Harris & Dylan Klebold killed 12 students, a teacher & injured 20 others. At around 11:19 am, the two teenagers began firing at fellow students sitting outside the Columbine High School before making their way into the building. This is undoubtedly one of the most brutal school massacres in the history of the United States. On December 14, 2012, in Newton, Connecticut, 20-year-old Adam Lanza shot & killed 20 children between the ages of 6 & 7 as well as six adult staff members. The mass shooting took place at the Sandy Hooks Elementary School. Before driving to the school, Lanza killed his mother in their Newton home using a rifle. Nancy Lanza was later found in her bed with four gunshot wounds to the head. She owned a number of firearms which she kept in the house where she lived with Adam. In the past she’d taken her son to the range & taught him how to shoot. On April 16, 2007, the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University, in Blacksburg, Virginia, became the site of a mass shooting in which 32 people lost their lives & 17 others were injured. 23-year-old Seung-Hui Cho, a senior at Virginia Tech, was responsible for the massacre which took place in two separate attacks, approximately two hours apart. At the time it was the deadliest shooting in US history carried out by a single gunman. In the first incident, Cho shot & killed two fellow students in West Ambler Johnston Hall. Virginia Tech VIRGINIA TECH would later be sanctioned & criticized for failing to issue a campus-wide warning after the first two victims had been shot. Around two hours later, Cho entered Norris Hall & chained shut three main entrance doors with a note on one of them claiming that it was rigged to explode should anyone attempt to open it. Armed with two semi-automatic handguns & almost 400 rounds of ammunition, Cho unleashed his devastating assault on students & faculty members. In one of the rooms, Liviu Librescu, a Romanian-American academic & Israeli Holocaust survivor held the door long enough for all but one of his students to escape out of the window.The deadliest school massacre in history took place in September 2004, at School No.1 in Beslan, North Ossetia, Russia. At the opening of the school year, on September 1st , at least 34 armed individuals stormed the school. Some managed to escape while others were killed in the initial attack others were before over 1,100 people, including teachers, 777 grade children as well as parents & relatives were taken hostage. They were herded into the school gym which the terrorists rigged with explosives. The attackers began talks with Russian authorities & included in their demands the withdrawal of Russian military forces from Chechnya & the recognition of its independence.
